interrupt the moments for one little word

i am taking a small break from the moments to bring you.....one little word. our word this month was color. stop by and check out what everyone else made.

could they have picked a better word?.....i think not! if you have been a long follower or have recently just joined- you will not see much soft pastel colors here. nope- i paint and work in big, bright, happy, colors....and usually as many as i can.

here is a sneak peak of my painting for "color." i painted mine on yupo paper- beginning with paper that already had paint down, but, was clearly not finished.

do you have a favorite color? let me know which one! want to play along?....there is a "add your link" at the bottom of the post on the one little word link above- so come and join us! if you do- be sure to let me know!

altered can and ATCs- lesson

my student and i started on our found object art....i choose a found old film can, and my student choose a wooden glove box. the other piece that i thought would be fun would be to make ATCs for our boxes.
i managed to find my circle playing cards i purchased at a rummage sale which fit perfectly into my tin. we painted on yupo paper to make our ATCs. i wanted her to experience painting on yupo paper. it has the least amount of control for painting surfaces when compared to canvas or a wooden cradle, but, i felt it was important for her to understand what type of surface may work better for certain projects.

my student agreed, that the yupo paper was definitely different to paint on due to the lack of control and unexpected reactions. on canvas you can remove paint to find the layer underneath, but, on yupo- you may wipe everything away and be back down to white.....but, in spite of this- my student has done an excellent job of adapting and produced wonderful ATCs for her box. these below are from Cora, my student.

throwing paint with my mom/ mother's day

to celebrate mother's day yesterday, my mom came over to paint and have supper. we each had a larger project that we were working on, but, on the side painted on smaller pieces- which is what i have included today.

i love my mom's collage.....but, she always says i have the best scraps in the world in my studio :) her collage is on a strip of watercolor paper with scraps and paint found in my studio. we put a frame around it to see- ooooh, la, la!! stunning in a frame.....
mine here is acrylic paint on yupo. i had already painted what i thought was the background, and when i started to paint over the top- my first idea was not panning out, so, option two emerged, and i went with it to create the princess below.

happy tuesday to you! i have been toying with moving my blog.....apparently, i had reached the maximum storage for this blog and could not store anymore pics. to fix this problem, i started using flicker- which has worked like a charm; however, you can only post one pic at a time with flicker.....or at least i am not "techy" enough to figure out how to post more than one pic at a time. i have been debating on moving this blog and starting another blog....if anyone else has experience with this- starting another blog or figuring out how to post additional pics....i would love to hear from you!! please.....

i added just a few fine details before turning the bouquet over to the bride on monday....i added her date of the wedding onto the leaves and a little pencil to the outer edge to bring it in..... when i explained the details to the mom, she cried; but, this is a really emotional week for all of them i think. i can't wait to go to the wedding on saturday! they are getting married in our historic palace theater- i can't wait to see what they come up with...they have another local artist is in charge of the decorating, so i am really excited for them.

bridesmaid flower- mixed media

so here is one of the mixed media flowers for the bridesmaids. i chose flowers because you can pick what you want- and the bride chooses who she would want for her bridesmaids. the petal paper is from a prayer book and the leaves are some of the same sheet music i used in the invitations. i used yupo paper and inks, washi tape and sewing. i will show a few more this week for anyone who would like to see a few more....

ink on yupo

here was an experimental playing...i was playing with different inks on yupo paper. i couldn't quite decide at the time whether i liked the clean look of my flowers or if i like this messy one that i sewed on to help create the flower. i do like the washi tape by the flower stem....this one is not finished,  but, coming along...."cooking" if you will.

mixed media flower on yupo

this is the beginning of some mixed media flowers on yupo paper. this project is a continuation of the wedding....the bride and her mom asked if i would make bridemaid gifts for them. i agreed and asked if they had any ideas of what they wanted, and i got-"whatever you make will be cool!" so, although this is nice to hear.....i wanted a little direction on ideas. i had been inspired by Robin-Marie Smith. i loved her botanical series and wanted to try my own twist on that...so, this is the beginning of the gifts....we will see what direction they take. so far, i have 7 different colors "flowers" as the bases. i used a variety of alcohol inks and my roll of tape to try and keep in a circle and when i was happy with the circle, I let the extra ink run to make the stem. i also used glimmer mist to provide a little more color and some shine.

yupo paper continued....

this is my newest rendition on the yupo paper....i continued to play and then decided that what it really needed was to add some collage and my favorite french script stamp. ultimately, my plan is to cut this large sheet into several small original works for an up-coming show. :)

Artists Against Hunger Show  is coming up in two weeks. the show will kick off on friday, dec 7th.
