experimenting {mom's studio}

hung out at my mom's studio yesterday.....do you snapchat? find me (kristin peterson) to watch my story.

she had a technique we tried- this top one is mine and the bottom is hers.

i am thinking i will cut mine up and she was going to leave hers as a full sheet.

the bright colors make me happy.

happy monday.

square love

i have been so enjoying painting smaller lately. painting up more of the matboard tiles, including more mini's, and i found 6"x 6" wooden cradles i had bought, and painted those up too.

just like almost everything, i put down a skim coat of gesso to start and worked from there. the wooden cradles paint different than canvas and if you use an ink on the cradle without gesso the ink will be absorbed by the wood.

as a point of interest- i only the gesso the actual front panel and not the sides. i like how if the ink or wet paint runs off the front panel that it is absorbed by the sides of the cradle.

on this bottom cradle i used a strip of painted paper and attached to the board after i had gotten my background done. and can you see i have had a circle obsession?....can't seem to help myself, but, i love them....

happy friday!

round 2 for recipe card

i made another recipe card- this one is actually more of a recipe holder with a pocket on the back to hold the recipe written out on small sheets of paper.

i cut down a file folder to make this recipe card because it is a bit sturdier than paper and not overly thick like cardboard. i like the tab i left and it was perfect for adding the words i had found, "licking his lips."

when i cut down the file folder- i made the card 4" x 6". i used acrylic paint and a stencil for the larger circles, and spray ink and another stencil for the smaller circles. i applied the green with the edge of a gift card.

i added the little swatch of fabric for a soft touch and stitched around the very edge of the back paper to make my pocket for the pages.

gelli plate printed backgrounds

yesterday, my mom and i got to hang out and play for a bit.

she had not seen a gelli plate before, and i am still trying to figure mine out. we played and dripped paint many times. it is amazing to me how many prints you can make from one plate- we printed so many before lunch that we had boxed us in my studio space basically to the counter we were working at with papers of wet paint on the floor.

i started with this background of purple, iridescent, and white. i added the book paper, ink and the orange ink around the circle. my mom had brought her sketch book and we used the duds to print on- which was perfect. the book was watercolor sheets that were 6"x12".

i made my own stencil of a woman. i had used paper circles and some heavy gel and a stencil to add to the background. i used black spray paint to outline her. i took this first pic before i outlined the girl with an ink pen. with the spray paint it was a bit more difficult to get crisp edges and i felt i needed to outline her for a better finish.
this was my second woman yesterday. again, the main back ground is from our gelli plate printing. i added a few paper circles; the red is a scrapbooking paper circle i made. this one i used acrylic paint to outline my stencil. the edges were crisper and i could control the "dark" myself a little better.

if you are interested in how i made woman stencil- stop back. i will take pics and explain my process.

class complete- finished items

with our class now complete, i took additional pictures of Cora's pieces while we were placing the items into the window for public display.... this first pic is her encaustic piece. it is a wooden cradle with acrylic paint layered with wax and ribbon. i am not sure that Cora will ever work in wax again....there is a trick to working with wax and it is not always very easy to control. our focus on this project was to discuss the safety issues and concerns when working with encaustic and experience- which she did receive, but, the lack of control was not her favorite.
her "found" box turned out really nicely. it began life as a gloves wooden box and with a little paint and paper and some stamping- it was magically transformed. Cora made ATCs on yupo to place inside.
this is Cora's smaller canvas painting- we did talk about color choices and she did some painting with her fingers.
this was the finished larger acrylic painting- she did a great job with color choices.
i am so glad to have met Cora and to have the opportunity to work with her! i cannot wait to see what she accomplishes.....dream big Cora and follow your whispers!

throwing paint with my mom/ mother's day

to celebrate mother's day yesterday, my mom came over to paint and have supper. we each had a larger project that we were working on, but, on the side painted on smaller pieces- which is what i have included today.

i love my mom's collage.....but, she always says i have the best scraps in the world in my studio :) her collage is on a strip of watercolor paper with scraps and paint found in my studio. we put a frame around it to see- ooooh, la, la!! stunning in a frame.....
mine here is acrylic paint on yupo. i had already painted what i thought was the background, and when i started to paint over the top- my first idea was not panning out, so, option two emerged, and i went with it to create the princess below.

weekend collage fun

this weekend i got some much needed studio time....and i felt like i was kinda on a roll....
loved my bird collage....i had gotten new papers (the gold polka dot) and a new roll of washi tape (the pink...), some stitching, acrylic paint, and of course my new stamps from Paperbag Studios- the mixed media essentials (these are available starting may 1). i was so lucky to be asked to be a part of the design team- check this out....
for this one below i used yupo paper....it is a plastic type paper and does not behave like anything else...the background piece and the heart are yupo. i also used inks, acrylic paint, stitching and stamping....
one of my goals this year was to re-open my etsy shop...so, this weekend i decided to give etsy one more whirl and posting some of my new pieces there.
sad that the weekend is over.....

chameleon girl

i went and painted with my mom and her friend to chosen music- herbie hancock....a jazzy little number. i had gotten a good start that initial day and liked what i had when i left. i painted on it the other day and clearly it was going through its' "ugly phase" as this was bad, but, apparently salvageable because i like what i ended up with. i had put down a glaze over the entire painting and it was very wet and had flowed and puddled to certain portions of the canvas and when it dried- there a good start to what my eye saw as a girl. a jazzy, funky girl moving to the beat.....in her wonderful shoes and awesome striped stockings!

how my garden grows

here is the painting with the words i painted over (my liberated post earlier)....this is my grunge flowers; that i now love.

this is a 30"x40" canvas. i used acrylic paint, india inks, gelatos (thanks Donna for introducing me to those!!), and collage with some paper and napkins.

the layers are rich and full of texture- you want to touch this painting. this garden was grown with a lot of love, sweat, and almost tears. :)

re-work

this original painting hung in both galleries that i am in but did not find another home. sometimes whispers tell me to re-work painting....which is what i am in the process of doing now. the words on the painting, were part of the original painting, and, i wanted to keep those. i was thinking i was almost finished with this and then, decided to layer the white- it was quite bold underneath. while contemplating what i had just done, i noticed the purple india ink....and decided that was needed too.

i loved the circles, but, before they were really in your face....now, with the layering i like how the circles softly come through. i love how the purple ink ran- this particular layer was really  wet.. i will show more after letting it "cook" for another day or two. happy monday!
