i taught a collage class this past saturday and wanted to have collage samples of exactly what i was talking about. the types of paper, the purpose behind the paper selection, and at least a few options of other things to do with your collage.
here is a short video of the collage squares i made for class.
i think my favorite one is the little guy with the paper hat and hand sewing.
which one is your favorite?
these were so much fun- thinking of making more and putting in my etsy store for the holidays.

do you know that i sew?.... almost becoming a lost art now a days; but me......
i come from a long line of seamstresses. both of my grammas sewed as well as my mom.
clothes, furniture slip covers- they did it all. and they did it superbly. if i could describe the shirt i wanted, my gramma could sew it for me without a pattern.
i used to sew clothes for my kiddos when they were little, but as they grew up- (and they could voice their own opinion), slowly that changed.
then i found sewing on paper..... and love that almost as much as sewing on fabric. i don't hesitate for a moment to go and throw my paper under the sewing machine.
but i have found a bit of a balance however between art and sewing in the form of bags and my dolls (current doll i am working on).
both the bags and dolls make great gifts and i am always open to custom orders. size, color, lined with plastic, maybe no plastic....you tell me.

don't you just love it when your package from stencilgirl is waiting for you when you get home from work?! i do!!
i had new stencils arrive the end of this last week and couldn't stand not taking them down to the studio.
here is a quick peek of how i like to use my stencils to tame a busy background from my youtube channel.

like this little collage square?
making a few samples to get ready for the class.
super excited to teach as we will be moving from simple collage to a bit more complex by adding paint and ink. our focus will be on freedom, play and exploration of paper.
come join me!

compositional dreaming....wishing it were still the weekend.
i am not ready for monday; i don't want to go to my big girl job.
my head is whirling with ideas and things i
want need to do in my studio.
did i mention the need?!.....
monday. blah. blah. blah.......

she would be ok.
knew september would be difficult. feel like i have been holding my breath as i moved through the month.
slowing letting that breath out and inhaling again.
mixed feeling about going to the studio (damn doubt hanging on the edge, trying to creep in); but knowing i would feel better if all i did was even sit down there. i was right. the sounds of my music playing. the smell with my little burner on. the colors and controlled (ok- maybe not so controlled) chaos of the permanent stage of my studio. yep.
i would be ok.

details of the unfiltered goodness from my planner.
why write and schedule when you can dream and draw to fill the time?
limited supplies while i was traveling and i did write about being in the airport and realizing i loved the black ink pen i had brought to use. why wasn't i using this pen more- as the pen was hidden away in a drawer.....silly me.

sometimes truthfully it is better in black and white.
i have been struggling to make it to the studio to do anything. between work and home projects that needed attention before the weather really changes....studio time has been nil.
so much, so that doubt and that fragile personal artistic view of what i can do was creeping in to tunnel my vision at the worst time as i have deadlines coming.
wanting to find some inspiration and push myself out of this funk- i realized i hadn't posted this face. maybe for various reasons (damn doubt)....but, it is interesting and raw.
and to be honest...sometimes that is all that is needed. nothing close to perfect or pretty. but, to add some quirky artist randomness, i had used this page for whatever reason as a color palette testing out colors along the edges. silly girl.
black and white.
the rawness and shades of grey.
sometimes the best.
stumbling through this dark tunnel.

just love making these homemade foam stamps...
never done that you say?! super easy.....
find sticky back foam sheets- i had gotten my package from walmart in fun bright colors. to make the back piece, i normally cut a square and then fold in half (these are super sticky!!! fyi....) to provide a little more stability to the stamp; although it isn't necessary- you certainly can do a single sheet.
if you do a single sheet for the back instead of folding in half- do not use the sticky back! this should then be just the regular foam.
but use the sticky back foam for the actual shapes for the front of the stamp itself.
i always like circles- or some variation of circles; and love the lines (mine is the one hiding on the right hand side with the pink background and purple stripes above). you will notice that i waste nothing....when i cut the circles, i realized that my first set were too big for the top background- so i cut those down to fit and then used that outside circle edging and put those onto another background.
this is my pile of used foam stamps.....
happy hump day.

sometimes the monochromatic simplicity is all that i am capable of. and really, sometimes it is all that is needed.
- had used this page as a palette; loved the simplicity of the color, with the lights and darks
- stencil with white paint (stencilgirl)

the colors run and pool. collecting in unexpected places; filling those blank spots with color. the collection tells a story all of its' own.
so many stories written, painted and glued.
dreams of sharing. big news will be coming soon.

total infatuation with these colors
quin nickel azo gold & paynes grey
and the simplicity of the card
mailing off this birthday card with a little something along with a huge care package. so weird that we wont be there on his birthday. weird. i know....not really. he is at college and is supposed to leave home at this age....but, he is the youngest and i am still adjusting.
the whole empty nest is strangely nice at times; and just empty at others.

- underpainted used file folder
- fabric scraps
- layered painted book paper
- masking tape
- machine sewing; hand sewing

Roben-Marie's tag add on challenge

- cardboard piece
- tab edge of manilla folder
- fabric pieces

Are you playing?
- thickened notecard (glued two together); cut to square
- homemade stamp (stacked circles); painted over
- hi-flow acrylics in various colors
- stencil (although i was heavy-handed with the paint, and used a water wash to remove some of the paint)
- sari ribbon
happy short week!

a mother's job.
indeed. to hold all that sh*t together no matter what it takes.
tape. lots of tape... a variety of tape.
staples. sometimes the more the merrier.
layered paper. stronger.
stitched all up.
and sometimes that "hold everything together" is just for you. right?.....
art. creating. it saves the soul.
it doesn't have to be pretty. or look nice.
sometimes it will just be what it is. how you felt. whatever was within arms reach. tape. staples. paper.

don't you just love stencils?!.....
yet another saved very-overworked painting.
- one very overworked painting; color, scribbles, drips, dabbles
- stencil girl stencil
- payne's grey with a soft sponge roller with said stencil
- jayne davenport's paint over pen- white

this is the small stack of art journals that i packaged up and mailed out last week.
the one journal was a couple of years worth of work; so when i packaged it up to mail out.... i prayed that this stack would arrive safely to its' designation.
i love it enough to let it go.
if i am not willing to take a risk..... nothing will ever happen.
*big things are in the works.....big things.....
happy hump day.

my mom would totally be correcting my poor grammar here..... goodness.
anyway....was working on samples for an up coming in-person class close to home.
loved the colors and how my fingers looked.
i know it is monday, but make a promise to yourself to spend 20 minutes in the studio today.
you owe it to yourself.

a little art therapy in the form of a vintage bingo card and some paint covered fingers.
doesn't it feel good to cut paper?.....jagged cut, sure. sharp cornered edge, maybe. flat side, probably.
imperfect circle happiness.
and then, sewn.
sewing. (aaaaah. again...happiness)
with pink thread.
except......look closely.....at the book paper and the words.
omg.....really?! that was what i seriously cut out? AND glued down?
happy monday to you.

i had an idea that i thought would work (seemed good in my head anyway)....but the reality was that it didn't work at all.
she would be perfectly imperfect.
may your weekend be filled with the perfectly imperfect.
