finding herself..... {image transfer}

finding herself within an image transfer...

i used matte medium gel on a pic i liked from a magazine and put her onto my card. make sure you have a good connection between the magazine pic and whatever you are putting it onto and allow to dry.

Once dry, spritz with water and remove the top layer of paper gently; until you see the pic underneath. don't rub too hard as you can quickly rub through your image you wanted.

if you have not done this before, i would recommend practicing on something you don't care about and a practice image first to get the feel......

happy transferring.

like the background?....big news coming very soon!

... {art journal}

this isn't maybe my usual color combo; but sometimes you need to stretch and push outside of your comfort zone...and not every page needs to be pretty.

who wants an art journal full of cupcakes? life is messy. art journaling should be messy.

i really like the texture and the edges, where other pages colors have seemed through.

i was trying the image transfer again- love the inconsistencies and the color variations.

this corner is more than messy, but, i somehow love this.

the edges full of color from other work. gesso'd variation that lends itself to other colors and possibilities. the brown oil crayon with the pink and gold colors.....

....this is the reality of art journaling. no cupcakes here.

image transfer {art journal}

i went to washington d.c. for my big girl job this past week, and i had purchased a few new magazines to read along the way. one of the magazines was stampington's artists' cafe best of mixed media, which was excellent. in this issue, there was an article about image transfer by heather kindt.

not sure how long you all have been following this artistic journey, but, i have a thing for image transfer; so any article that talks about transfers- is a must read. heather used a fashion magazine for her images which made the transfer much easier as the paper was easy to rub away.

i couldn't wait to get home to try this out....below is my first try using a fashion magazine image.

happy monday.

Image transfer with Recycled Collage for Documented Life

the challenge for week nine was to "collage something you recycled." and what better to recycle than an old photo?.....if you are wondering about the photo and whether it is my family- i usually only use mine own in photocopy form so as not to destroy my own collection; but,....i normally always look for old photos at rummage sales, flea markets and auctions. if you find old photos at an antique store, those are normally expensive- so i do not buy photos there (because i am cheap.....)- but, be on the look out.

for this challenge, i wanted to see through my photo and be able to see what was underneath. there are quite a few ways to perform image transfer, but, because i was going to use the actual photo itself, i chose to use the packing tape trick- placing it through the middle to capture the three girls.
in doing this method, i spray the back with water, and then, carefully rub off the paper on the backside of the packing tape. you need to be careful because when the paper becomes really thin- it is easy to simply rub away all of the image and rub through.

here is my finished page.....i recycled vintage ephemera and my old photo. i love how the transfer worked and that you can see the words behind the image- and just lightly through her face. i found the word "important" on an vintage envelope and it seemed perfect for this project for many reasons.....the project itself; the use of the actual photo; being able to use the actual receipts.....all important for this documented life moment in my moleskin.

things that "went" bump in the night

this was our motley crew of artists for the night. i am the referee trying to blow my whistle....

this was my finished piece....i really liked my creepy story i had come up with and my image transfer worked great.

this is just the end of the story. you can kind of see the great texture that was on the painting. i used a painting that had not sold to start over with and paint on for the evening. it was really fun to see what each of us did- all VERY different. we raised over $800 to donate to our local fine arts community! great fun was had by all that evening! thanks to HGS Gallery for hosting- it was a spooktacular idea!!

and tonight, i shall paint (in my best transylvania accent)

tonight, my best friend who owns HGS gallery here in town is hosting a "things that go bump in the night" painting show. she asked 6 local artists to a "paint off." we have a set amount of time for painting and at the end of the evening, our creations set to the theme, will be in a silent auction. the money we raise tonight will be donated to our local fine arts committee who are working on a community project.

i normally do not paint in a set amount of time, so although, i will be painting in acrylics, (my medium of choice), the time factor has been making me nervous. above, is a transfer off a vintage pic that i plan on using. getting the gel medium onto the copy and allowing time for drying in between layers takes time...time i did not want to lose tonight- so i prepped this last weekend.

this is a portion of my storyline....i was doing a trial run to see what i wanted to write my story in...pencil, versus ink, or sharpie....i'm thinking a combo of pencil (which would be my choice) and ink. oh, and we have to wear costumes!! that was the other kicker for tonight...i am looking forward to tonight just to see what we all will create. there will be some very talented artist there tonight. i will try to get pics of the creations to share with you. wish me luck....
