29: studio list {alteredstatesstudio}

  1. gesso'd credit cards. you can always tell my favorite one as the gesso is thick
  2. t-shirt and cotton scraps as painting rags; wiping of paint brushes, catching paint runs and drips
  3. stabilo pencils of any color; the way these bloom with water
  4. charcoal; dry or wet and used to add grey scale and shadows
  5. painting with my fingers
  6. gold ink in drips and drops on anything
  7. india ink; with chopsticks for thick and thin lines
  8. pencils words; of songs, poem, thoughts- have you written on it?
  9. rectangular paper pad underneath work to catch everything; magical paper. if you don't have one, you should
  10. music; a must; constant in the studio on my almost old school ipod- listen to what moves you
  11. viva papertowels; rolls, and rolls, the only papertowel to use
  12. journals; in different shapes and sizes with all sorts of paper weight
  13. vintage cosmetic cases; love them and that strange smell that they all have. my smallest one is my favorite, but the stack makes me happy
  14. ephemera of any sort
  15. stacks of books, magazines for inspiration and education
  16. sewing machine; ready at a moments notice
  17. fabric scraps down to a ridiculously small size because you never know if you just need a little bit
  18. paint drips on the uneven concrete floor
  19. coffee tin full of used teabags; printing
  20. my kid's art on the walls make me smile; they are no longer small
  21. art from friends and other admired artists on the walls; trades, purchases
  22. old books, especially dictionaries; the paper is wonderful
  23. bingo cards, napkins, sewing patterns
  24. cigar boxes full of ribbon and lace, tags, and trim
  25. gelli plates with leftover paint goodness; print
  26. family pictures
  27. stamps; downsized, but, still full
  28. hi flow acrylics, lined up for a quick hands grab
  29. tins full of thread; almost any color...some old, some new

truly a magical space....

she was magical {29faces}

there is something magical about this strange girl. i had posted her the other day on my instagram with the caption "she would never be perfect but she would be loved"; and for me.....that is so true.

i love the collaged paper i put down and words softly peeking through her hand. the child-like smear of red around her mouth. the watercolored bow on her head and how the color leaked out of the bow space; and the fact that it is acrylic paint and not watercolor at all. i love the polka dot edge of her face from the stencil ink that was down on the paper before i started and then leeched through the gesso. and the diffuse golden yellow of her hair. and her nearly perfect nose. and the far from perfect hand.

do you have a favorite part?

29 faces {february 2016}

i started the 29 faces for february 2016. a bit behind, but, working on getting caught up. i did several faces yesterday and i could feel the face "dust" being blown out of the corners. my first one was definitely a warm up; and as i worked through the second one....i could feel the muse come to life.

this first one was not maybe one of my favorites- although, part of her i love....like this hair line area.

the second one.......this journal is a favorite because of what it holds, but it has made art journaling a bit complicated because it probably was never meant to be an art journal; so the page are thin and when damp- tend to tear easily. and her lips were one of those areas.....i apparently had worked that area too much- which lead to me collaging in a vintage envelop portion...which i now love.

again....loving portions of her.......these are a few favorites....

happy monday.

valentine's

unpacking my box and bags from Seattle and settling back into my own studio space.......

and i have to be honest.....i am in love with this fat Lyra graphite pencil that i bought to take Katie's class. it writes so smooth and goes down nicely and then a spritz of water, and the graphite pops to life and the black runs and will move a bit.

valentine's are due in a swap very soon- so i wasted no time..... the valentine's were supposed to be on playing cards and since i have cleaned and reorganized my studio- do you think i can find my whole box of playing cards?!!! of course not.

so i improvised and used a bingo card because it was about the same thickness and just cut it down to size.

i cut and then gesso'd; and once dry- i glued on collage before adding paint and ink and working some valentine magic.....

i received an order for valentines after posting to FB.....so will working to fill that order this weekend.

happy thursday!

kindred spirits {layered movement- Katie Kendrick}

when i posted on friday here, i really only showed my work through saturday. on sunday we spent a bit more time telling our stories. it was such a bonding experience to hear everyone's stories:

  • experienced painter,
  • just beginning,
  • needing personal time and feeling very guilty about there,
  • working through personal healing,
  • ailing parents; time away

we were all from different places and in different stages in life, but, all had come on this journey with a story. i met extraordinary people and am very thankful i was able to take the class.

my sunday painting was to embrace this group and to capture our similar spirits. here was my progress- making the backgrounds....

finding the kindred spirits on these wooden panels...(and if i am being honest....i worked these poor faces multiple times- poor Betty was probably about ready to ship me off.....thank you for sharing supplies)

i really like these ladies- each similar, but with their own story in that shared space.

Katie was originally from the midwest, and even though i don't think i have an accent....apparently i do. Katie and i shared that accent and how we said certain things. we laughed about it...and her laugh- so infectious! loved it- full-bodied goodness with a tinge of mischief!

and Lory! thank you for organizing the class and all of help with my mailed supplies....

missing my time there...loved the spirit of the city and my class. added music to my playlist to bring me back to that studiotime and Katie- i will forever think of you, Katie and my time in seattle when i hear those songs.

my family was so kind- i hope to see them and their fur babies (their dogs were so sweet!) very soon. this heart shaped rock was on the dresser in my bedroom.....loved it all.
