courage.... {show up}

creativity takes courage- Henri Matisse

i have still been thinking about the class i taught recently and how truthful this statement really is.

all those people had huge courage to try new things. new concepts. new colors. new techniques.

courage to collage. to paint over. to write on.

today i encourage you to try something new. glue something down that you wouldn't have used. spray some ink on that.... and if you can, sew on something- even some little hand sewing.

find your courage. show up in your space. just create.

mixed media bird

i am in a FB group that does art swaps and there is a smaller group of us that are called "angels" that assist when someone did not hold up their end of the bargain on the swap. i was asked to assist and make a missed swap- and this little bird is one of those....... there was someone in our group that did not receive their feathered friend. this little bird is already on its' way to her new home.

I love the fluffy yarn with trailing strings! i think i did have some other nice details on my bird. one was to hand stitch her fabric beak and another of those was to hand stitch on the edge of her lace tail. i did machine sew the lace on first and then went back over just the edge to tack the edge and a few other missed edges.

the other nice detail was the wired feet.....those make me smile. i used two different types of "ribbon" for her legs....one is a fabric tape measure and the other a cotton ribbon.

i did not want to hang her and have to attach some sort of wire or anything else to her head or back so i decided she needed to sit and added a tab on the back so she would not tip over.

her body was made from heavy 300 lb watercolor paper that i cut out the main shape of the body and started from there. her wing was made from another another type of lace. i spritz that wing with my dylusion spray ink to add a splash of color.

postcards

a few of you had asked for a video and i was hoping to deliver.....although my editing skills are not exactly tip-top (clearly.....as this part took a long, frustrating while)- so you can imagine how disappointed i am when i was hoping to share my video this morning and let you watch my process- but after watching my video when it was posted to youtube and it was not good and i had to pull it....sorry.

i will have to try again.

love the pink and mix of collage and stamps.

i used Roben-Marie's Artpops cards again as the base and worked over the top with collage, paint and my new Dream Thicket stamps. both the cards and stamps are available at Paperbag Studios.

#DreamThicket {more samples}

would you like to see more?.....need your own set of stamps? the stamps are available at PaperBag Studios here!

mixed media piece-watercolor, acrylic, stamping, sewing....this vintage paper reminded me that it sometimes can be very fragile; but, i so loved the look and feel of this.

and what can i say about owl?.....he is just so darn cute! i added a few extra details to him which was so much fun. this was in an art journal that originally was a blot off of a stencil- if you see the pink polka dots showing through- that was a very wet stencil that i blotted off into my art journal to use as a jumping off point- which was perfect!

happy thursday!

#dreamthicket

this girl has totally taken flight.....because this morning i am introducing Dream Thicket.

so excited to share this information with everyone! through a collaboration with the very talented Roben-Marie Smith i have my own rubber stamp line (....pinch me now!!) which is now available in Roben-Marie's store Paperbag Studios!

all the images were created by me and now you can use these rubber stamps in your work as well! art journaling, mixed media, or even on cotton fabric...whatever you come up with!

we are doing a blog hop- and have a great list of artists who created with Dream Thicket rubber stamps- so be sure to check out the links below. you won't want to miss these!

the Dream Thicket rubber stamps are a deep cut rubber stamp with great image quality and this sheet will come however you would like.....want the stamps already mounted on wood? got it! how about cling so you can use your clear acrylic block to check placement? got those too! or do you like to do your own mounting and cut out? sorry you are out of luck...just kidding!! if you like to do your own mounting- Paperbag Studios has that too!

here are a couple of my own examples. be sure to stop back as i will be posting other creative examples all week!

here is our list of creative souls that joined this journey and created with Dream Thicket rubber stamps:

Roben-Marie Smith
Mystele Kirkeeng
Shelley Chavis
Tina Walker

a conversation

my mom had purchased this book for me "101 things to learn in art school" and each time i look through- something reaches out and whispers to my soul.

this particular note grabbed my attention and as i read through the message- i was contemplating my own artistic journey.

i think that initially- i knew what i wanted to do, but, lacked understanding on several levels for my own personal success... color palette, color wheel, and composition. i was afraid of neon colors and did not understand what would make my painting/ journaling pop. and composition.....this can still be a struggle. but, a few key notes.....collage papers need friends- always give them at least one friend and don't leave things hanging....they need to be grounded. "an image may contain information that arrives without your conscious understanding of how it got there. if you aren't engaged and observant, you might miss it or work over it."

i believe that i would previously work over it or miss it completely.....have a conversation with yourself and what you are creating- take your time if you need to....and keep practicing and pushing through; keep working and always learning.

i am preparing to go to class at the end of this week- so excited!

happy tuesday!

mixed media crown {for the studio}

i had found a crown shape at the craft store and had been holding onto to it until the creativity spark hit. this last week with all of our busyness i could not take it anymore and went to the studio for some much needed creative therapy.

you know the kind....apron on, paint, ink and glue on the fingers and your favorite music playing in the background (and maybe a little dancing all by yourself....).

as i was working through this little project, i was so excited to find the words, "expanded wings." the past few weeks have been so busy with the life (and i have been enjoying all of it), i had been feeling like my creative studio wings had been clipped and not capable of expanding; and then this project yelled at me to grab that plain crown hiding under the counter.

and those wings began to spread....gesso on...that cool, gritty feel on my hands checking to see if the gesso is dry yet.

and that instant gravity pull to one of your favorite colors of spray ink along with a stencil. pop! the vibrant turquoise popping off the crown against the white.

the gentle call of collage papers as your fingers are rifling through the pile. your eyes quickly scanning for meaning among words.

and just a few stamps to lend to your feel of this creative crown while happiness is washing over you and the smell of the silver paint is good in your nose, and yet indescribable.

so this mixed media crown will sit in the studio to remind me to expand those wings and find comfort in this studio haven where i shall remain the queen of this creatively messy space.

happy sunday....

#DLP {gelli plate printing}

this year especially with a senior graduating soon....life has been very busy and hectic; but, i am sneaking time and stealing moments in my studio space as this spring allows.

the last DLP challenge was to use the gelli plate while exploring paint and inks; and who can put that tool down?! i love mine and use it all the time for almost any project from tags and my art journal, to cards and as a paint palette.

here are a couple more pics my pages...

layered goodness of paint and stencils,spray inks, stabilo pencil and collage papers to finish off this journal pages.

and did you hear?.....Rae Missigman has stencils?!.....take a look here and get yours!
