wire & wax

do you sometimes have an overwhelming idea that must be created? i kept thinking of wax; and tissue paper, and wire.....

so yesterday i got to play in the studio for a bit and had to try this idea that was haunting me. i had tissue paper that had paint and ink on it. i cut my wire and made my circle carefully gluing my tissue paper onto the wire. i have colored encaustic wax and scraped it off onto my paper to add additional color with the red and lime green. then, i used regular bee's wax to add texture.

this was my second one. i used a finer wire to wrap around my initial wire to provide an unusual shape and hold the paper. i hand sewed around this one along the edge leaving my stitches loose. i really like the drips and runs of wax on this one- love how it caught on the thread and the softer colors.

i love the view of this one- you can see the bubbles of wax clinging to the edges and where they came to dry.

sticks n twigs

i am in a creative, artistic FB  group and signed up to participate in the May challenge to make something out of sticks to hang outside. there were several guidelines, one of which stated that you could not use more than 6 sticks.

i decided to use 3 sticks i had found in our yard. i also knew that i wanted to implement vintage items from my studio into my piece. i wanted some hard, rusty elements mixed with a little lace and a hint of glam for softness.

you can see the wire and lace used to tie the sticks together and the use of a religious piece i had picked up last year at a flea market. i nailed that into the twig because there was still little pieces of chain attached to each side.

i had purchased small metal tags and have the tools to print words- so i created my own tag and attached to my wire. i stamped the word into the tag and then, used white paint to make my word pop. i added a chandelier dangle for a little glam to this piece. i attached the dangle into the lace.

this shows the very top wire through the twigs and how i finished the wire off. i had only drilled through one twig at both ends- that one was thick enough. one of the other twigs is drilled at one end, but, not the other; and the third twig is not drilled at all. instead i used the natural branch bends to hold my wire in place.

this just shows the wire and lace tie with the natural bend in my twig below.

i had seen a thimble used for such a thing as below and had been saving mine to use for just the right project- and this was definitely it! i used materials in my studio to create my thimble of goodness. i love the small numbered circular tag.

this is a small key with a pearled pin wrapped and attached- again for a little softness. the key is attached to the religious piece.

here are all of my dangly items- one at each corner and my thimble which is my focal point and main feature in the middle. love my blue beads for a dash of color- and made a blue bead dangle for the lower portion mixed in with the fabric and string.

teapot

i started with wire for the armature to hold my paper. i used two different types- a light gauge and something heavier to be the main support.

i wanted to use tissue paper for the outside of my "teapot." i used white paper that i painted with watercolor. if you do this, move quickly and gently with the paint to your paper, as the tissue paper can be delicate. let this dry before applying to your armature.

i used a 50/50 mix of matte medium and water to stick and apply my tissue paper. you have to be a little careful, as the tissue paper can be delicate to apply, but, not too bad. you could use modge podge if you don't have any matte medium. i also used some glimmer mist to add a little glitz.

here is my lid...it is drying. same process...wire up your support and paper.

here is my finished teapot all ready to go to the tea party show. it looks a little like the teapot that jack built (heehee...) oh, well, i am never perfect and this wasn't suppose to be either. i like the quirky shape and handle.

my spout is not necessarily 3 dimensional, but, i decided that was ok too. that part is almost translucent- i couldn't get a good pic of that though. anyway- hope you enjoyed the teapot! do you have a teapot, teacup, or something related to tea? share a link in the comments and join this tea movement!
